Great Leaders Don’t Have All the Answers. They Build Better Questions.
Great Leaders Don’t Have All the Answers. They Build Better Questions.
When people think about leadership, they usually picture someone standing at the front of the room with all the answers.
That’s not leadership.
That’s Google with a coffee addiction.
Real leadership is something much less glamorous.
It’s listening.
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned at Beartooth Cleaning over the last few years is that every question our team asks is a gift.
That might sound strange coming from a company that cleans vacation rentals for a living, but hear me out.
If someone asks, “Where’s the backup lockbox code?” that’s not an inconvenience.
That’s a hole in our system.
If someone says, “GPS can’t find this property,” we don’t tell them to try harder.
We improve the directions.
We add landmarks.
We’re even working toward visual property guides so our team can recognize a home before they ever pull into the driveway.
If someone calls and says, “The road is closed. How do I get there?” we’ve just found another place where our procedures can improve.
And sometimes…
Vacation rentals decide to remind us that common sense is merely a suggestion.
“Charlene…there are six guests in lawn chairs sitting in the driveway watching us unload supplies.”
Well…
That wasn’t in the training manual.
But it probably should be now.
Vacation rentals aren’t linear.
Every property is different.
Every owner has different expectations.
Every guest has a unique way of reminding us that reality is far more creative than fiction.
No Standard Operating Procedure will ever answer every question.
But every question helps us write a better Standard Operating Procedure.
One thing I believe with my whole heart is this:
Nobody should ever be afraid to ask a question.
If an employee is afraid they’ll be yelled at or made to feel stupid for asking, we’ve already failed as leaders.
People don’t learn when they’re embarrassed.
They learn when they’re encouraged.
If someone doesn’t know something, my first question isn’t, “Why didn’t you know?”
It’s, “Did we make sure you had the information in the first place?”
That’s our responsibility.
Leadership isn’t about making people feel small.
It’s about helping them grow.
The funny thing is, every question our team asks makes us better.
“Where’s the water shutoff?”
“What if the smart lock battery dies?”
“There’s construction and I can’t reach the house.”
“The owner forgot to leave grill propane.”
“What do I do if the hot tub is already running a cleaning cycle?”
Each one becomes another note.
Another photo.
Another checklist.
Another improvement.
Our systems today weren’t created because someone in an office dreamed them up.
They were built by real cleaners asking real questions in real homes.
Those questions have led us to digital property guides, QR codes, better checklists, photos, inventory systems, and procedures that simply didn’t exist a few years ago.
That’s how a business grows.
Not because the owners know everything.
Because they’re willing to admit they don’t.
Leadership also means creating a place where people know they’re respected.
Cleaning is hard work.
Vacation rentals move fast.
Mistakes happen.
Unexpected situations happen every single day.
What matters isn’t pretending they won’t.
What matters is making sure your team knows they can call, ask, and get help without feeling like they’ve done something wrong.
A manager’s job isn’t to have all the answers.
It’s to build a team that’s confident enough to ask the questions.
The best compliment we can receive isn’t that our systems are perfect.
It’s that our Can-Do Crew keeps helping us make them better.
Every question today becomes a better system tomorrow.
Even if tomorrow’s question is, “Charlene…why is there a goat standing on the deck?”
Simon has already started a new section in the SOP titled ‘Unexpected Livestock.’
Honestly…I wouldn’t bet against needing it someday.
Have questions about managing your vacation rental or building better systems for your property? We’d love to help.
