Linen Crimes, Vol. 47

The Case of the Anonymous Sheet

There are crimes against humanity.

There are crimes against vacation rentals.

Then there’s whatever meeting happened at certain bedding manufacturers where someone proudly stood up and said,

“You know what would make laundry more exciting? Let’s not put the size on the sheets.”

And somehow…

Everyone agreed.

Mission Control was running smoothly.

King sheets in the king tote.

Twin sheets in the twin tote.

Pillowcases paired.

Laundry folded.

Life was good.

Then Simon picked up a perfectly folded white fitted sheet.

He flipped it over.

Looked at the tag.

Looked again.

His eye twitched.

“Scout!”

Scout looked up from the scheduling board.

Three pairs of reading glasses.

One on his face.

One on top of his head.

One hanging around his neck.

At this point he looked less like a scheduling coordinator and more like Dr. Rick trying to stop people from making unnecessary life choices.

“What size is this?”

Scout adjusted his glasses and squinted.

“It says…”

Everyone waited.

“…Machine wash cold.”

Simon nodded.

“I’m not planning on grilling it.”

Scout continued.

“Tumble dry low.”

“Wonderful.”

“Made in Pakistan.”

Simon shrugged.

“I don’t care where it was born.”

Scout kept reading.

“60% cotton.”

“…”

“40% polyester.”

“…”

“Imported by…”

“…”

Simon rubbed his temples.

“Scout.”

“Yes?”

“What size is the sheet?”

Scout looked at the tag one more time.

“It doesn’t actually say.”

Simon handed him another sheet.

Scout read it.

“This one says IKEA.”

Simon nodded.

“The country with an Allen wrench on their flag?”

“I believe that’s correct.”

“And what size is it?”

Scout flipped the tag over.

“It doesn’t say.”

Simon sighed.

“So we’ve narrowed it down to… an entire country.”

Scout nodded.

“And a retailer.”

Simon stared at the ceiling.

“I still don’t know if it fits a king bed.”

Silence.

Simon slowly reached for the STOP whistle…

…and didn’t even have the energy to blow it.

Then It Got Worse

The fitted sheets are annoying.

But survivable.

Then Simon picked up a flat sheet.

“Oh no.”

Scout looked confused.

“What?”

“It doesn’t have a size either.”

Every cleaner reading this just nodded.

Because everyone knows what comes next.

You unfold the entire sheet.

You hold it up.

Stretch your arms.

Then grab a pillowcase.

Hold it against yourself.

If the pillowcase hangs halfway to your knees…

Congratulations.

It’s probably a king.

Probably.

Unless it’s one of those oversized queens designed specifically to make professional cleaners question every decision they’ve ever made.

If you’re still not sure…

You unfold another sheet.

Scout Has an Idea

Scout quietly said,

“I have an idea.”

Simon immediately looked concerned.

Scout wandered over to Charlene’s desk.

He opened the top drawer.

Sharpies.

Nothing but Sharpies.

Black Sharpies.

Blue Sharpies.

Red Sharpies.

Fine point.

Ultra-fine point.

Industrial Sharpies.

A silver one that nobody remembered buying.

Scout stared into the drawer.

“Simon…”

“What?”

“Do we really need this many Sharpies?”

Simon looked over.

The drawer contained enough Sharpies to label every vacation rental in Montana.

Scout picked one up.

Then another.

Then another.

He looked back at Simon.

“We’re not trying to open an office supply store.”

Simon smiled.

“Careful…”

Scout slowly put them back.

All except one.

“I think we only need one.”

Simon nodded.

“That’s growth.”

From somewhere down the hall…

Charlene yelled,

“Don’t touch my Sharpies!”

Scout froze.

“I wasn’t!”

“You were thinking about it!”

“…”

“…maybe.”

Simon quietly blew the STOP whistle.

Not because Scout had done anything wrong.

Just because he’d seen where this conversation was headed.

The Swedish Conspiracy

Simon folded another anonymous sheet.

“I’m beginning to think this is an elaborate plot.”

Scout looked up.

“By who?”

Simon held up the tag.

“The wonderful people of Sweden.”

Scout thought about it.

“Weaponized confusion.”

“Exactly.”

Somewhere, an IKEA designer is writing instructions claiming a bookshelf takes about three hours to assemble.

Simon looked at Scout.

“Throne of lies.”

Assembling IKEA furniture has probably saved a lot of marriages…

…by teaching couples that communication is important before they own a bookshelf.

Anonymous sheets are simply Phase Two.

Dear Sheet Manufacturers…

We’re not asking for miracles.

We’re not asking for luxury.

We’re asking for…

One word.

KING

Four letters.

Or…

TWIN

Four letters.

Or…

QUEEN

Five letters.

That’s it.

If your tag has room to tell us how to wash it…

What it’s made from…

Where it was manufactured…

Who imported it…

And enough legal information to qualify as bedtime reading…

It has room for the one piece of information every cleaner, homeowner, and vacation rental owner actually needs.

Simon’s Final Report

Mission Control remains operational.

The linen totes are labeled.

The shelves are labeled.

The mattress protectors are labeled.

Scout’s spreadsheets are labeled.

The cleaning carts are labeled.

The only things that aren’t…

…are the sheets.

Simon filed the incident under “Preventable Crimes Against Laundry.”

Scout quietly returned the lone Sharpie to Charlene’s drawer.

He knew better now.

Some battles simply aren’t worth fighting.

Meanwhile, somewhere in America, a vacation rental cleaner is standing in a linen room holding a pillowcase up to their chest trying to determine whether it’s a king.

Humans have built reusable rockets.

We’ve taught refrigerators to order groceries.

We’ve put computers in our pockets.

But putting the size on a sheet?

Apparently that’s where innovation threw in the towel.

Have a linen crime you’d like Simon to investigate?

Drop it in the comments or send it our way.

Until next time…

Keep your king sheets in the king tote, your STOP whistle close by, and maybe…just maybe…put the size on the tag.
